SCHEDULE
DAY 3 SATURDAY JUNE 26th SEGMENT 3: 11.45 - 12.15 TRACK 2: ASD and ADHD in Schema Therapy Clinical Practice with Gry Secher |
As clinicians in schema therapy, we commonly encounter clients with undiagnosed attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and/or autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Oftentimes our knowledge of how these neurotypes show in people not disabled by them is too minute to identify them and provide the important psychoeducation and referrals for medication that they may need.
We may also see clients in our practice who barely make it through everyday life due to ADHD and/or ASD, even though they may have been treated for many other diagnoses in the psychiatric system. However, they may have never fbeen diagnosed for their underlying ADHD and/or ASD symptoms that amplified their dysfunctional schemas and modes to begin with.
In this presentation, Gry will go through some important points regarding people with these neurotypes, helping you identify them in your clinical practice. Next, Gry will give some examples of why their basic emotional needs in childhood and youth are often times not sufficiently met, leading to the formation of dysfunctional schemas and modes. Finally, Gry will discuss how you can treat your clients when you suspect underlying ADHD and/or ASD symptoms.
