ISST Member Exclusive: Watch the Enmeshment and Undeveloped Self Webinar with Jeff Conway

07 Nov 2019 10:09 PM | Travis Atkinson

Presented by Jeff Conway

A Closer Look at Enmeshment and the Undeveloped Self

During the webinar, Jeff engaged in a deeper and more expansive exploration of the Enmeshment and Undeveloped Self schema. Based on his experience, he offered viable strategies and interventions for healing patients struggling with the negative impact the schema has on their lives.

The Enmeshment and Undeveloped Self schema affects many patients, and even therapists who work with them. Untreated, this schema can undermine self-understanding, cause an internal state of confusion, provoke anxiety around forming close relationships, and limit the ability to function in the world.

Jeff focused on ways Enmeshment is engendered in the family system, and the impact culture has on instilling core beliefs related to it. He will emphasize two core unmet needs fostering Enmeshment: attunement and autonomy. Jeff explored the value of setting boundaries, including the impact weak or unclear boundaries can have. He also shared how roles in the family system can engender Enmeshment.

Finally, Jeff illustrated how a person can feel more empowered and better able to engage in more satisfying and reciprocal relationships on the pathway toward strengthening the Healthy Adult mode, weakening the Enmeshment schema and the destructive modes that accompany it.
