ISST Training

Dear ISST Colleagues,

In this unprecedented and highly stressful situation created by the coronavirus pandemic, we are committed to support the Schema Therapy Community in Practice and Training.  In view of the urgent imperative for Social Distancing, we have made an exceptional decision to institute a permanent policy of allowing trainers to provide any kind of Schema Therapy training or workshops, including Certification training and CPD (continuing professional development).

In order to ensure that the quality of such training is maintained, we have set out strict requirements that such trainings must meet.  The details are in the document, ISST Policy on the Provision on Schema Therapy Training Online During the Coronavirus Pandemic.

Training Applications need to go to this TCAB address:

Training Guidelines

This page provides information on the training required to meet that component of certification. This training can be taken as a complete program at one ST training program or an Independent Program can be put together from the curriculum components of a variety of programs as long as they add up to covering the entire required ST certification curriculum. Here you will find the latest requirement for meeting the training requirements to apply for certification in Schema Therapy.

At the request of training program directors in a number of countries and with their input, the EB has developed a process for granting exceptions to the  current academic requirement (Masters degree or higher) to be able to train in ST for certification. Below is the decision made by the EB.

We want to make clear: All of the online Training, whether for ST Certification or Continuing Education Credit, must be provided live and may not include continuous pre-recorded material (exceptions to this directive only include brief video illustrations and demonstrations of clinical work).  The aim of this requirement is to guarantee real interactive communication between participants and trainers. This includes all didactic and dyadic material.

Why Schema Therapy?

Schema therapy has been extensively researched to effectively treat a wide variety of typically treatment resistant conditions, including Borderline Personality Disorder and Narcissistic Personality Disorder. Read our summary of the latest research comparing the dramatic results of schema therapy compared to other standard models of psychotherapy.
